Joseph A Califano III, MD
Dr. Joseph A. Califano III, MD, is an internationally acclaimed otolaryngologist and physician-scientist specializing in head and neck surgical oncology. He focuses on minimally invasive treatments for tumors of the oral cavity, larynx, pharynx, thyroid, neck, and skull base, as well as conditions of the salivary glands and premalignant upper aerodigestive tract. His innovative approach aims to maximize functionality while minimizing cosmetic impact. Renowned for translating molecular biological research into clinical practice, Dr. Califano has pioneered the use of sequencing technologies for early detection of HPV-related and other head and neck cancers. Dr. Califano has authored over 300 peer-reviewed articles on clinical and basic cancer science and speaks frequently at national and international conferences. He serves on NCI Head and Neck Steering Committee, the NCCN Board of Directors, and the Council of the American Head and Neck Society. Before joining UC San Diego Health in 2015, he was a professor at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
Dr. Califano earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, completed his residency in otolaryngology at Johns Hopkins Hospital, and pursued a fellowship in head and neck surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
